Vocation
Was talking about this topic again yesterday with one of my friends....
Vocation, or as simple as God's calling, God's mission on us, or it can be simply how to lead a meaningful life with the inspiration of Holy Spirit?
As I am very much involved in the chaplaincy recently and also with the collective experiences shared by my friends, I realise that a question of "HOW TO LIVE A MEANINGFUL LIFE" will pop out in our thought at some point in our lives, not only once, but many times. So what's your response? Let me remind you a reality, that our lives aren't long.
Let us ponder a bit more. Is a meaningful life equivalent to blessed life? An exciting sharing from one of the members preparing for baptism, said that we were told by others that we are blessed because we have so many things. On the contrary, The Beatitudes remind us that happiness (blessed) lies on the poor in spirit, the one who mourn, the meek, the hunger and thirst for justice, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers and the one who is being insulted and persecuted. In another words, it seems like we will be most blessed or happy if we have nothing? Logically, it makes sense. In the materialistic world, we see a lot of riches seem not happy with their lives, but people like us or perhaps poorer seem contented with their lives though sometimes do mourn that "money not enough". We learn to enjoy the spiritual elements in life. For example, the friendship, the erotic relationship, family that we were given as we grow up and through this selfless giving and receiving, we knew that the food to our inner longing is no longer wealth, no longer people's attention but the awareness of the richness in our hearts that we are capable to give and to love, thus, we are freer!! We are not burdened when we choose to give and love. We are not fear of losing people's attention by striving hard for a better performance. Life is a journey, but not a forever wandering, so when the journey comes to its end, are we living our lives to the fullness?
A friend of mine asked me, "so are all the girls targeting for rich and intelligent guys?" He was quite frustrated at that time. My response is "yes, of course, money is very important." Sorry to be very straightforward, personally, I won't deny the fact that we want to have more money to lead our desired life, at least, something we need in our life on earth. It is a currency of exchange for the goods that we want as well. Education, healthcare, shelter and so on are all earned by money whoever it is from. The fact we are in this materialistic world, we need those things. The more unfortunate fact is we need to WORK HARD for it. So are all the spiritual elements that we are longing bullshitting? No, taking the nature as an analogy, the sunlight, water, oxygen and even our lives are given freely. No money can help us to pursue or create them! Life begins from the conception, it is when man and woman become one body, a life is gifted. We do aware that tragedies occur when life seems to begin from unwanted consequences. An accident for the couple? Perhaps I have to echo a word from someone, a SURPRISE. The life itself is so innocent that judgement for it should not be done by human. Taking all these complicated thoughts into consideration, we do understand that we have to hold two facts that we have to response our inner desire to love and yet we have to strive for a better life on earth. However, this co-occurrence allows us to give and share our material goods for the common good of others. There is a deeper meaning after all is the freedom as our incentive to bring beauty to the everyone.
Life intrinsically is a mystery, but it is good, and comprises the respect towards human dignity. Let us imagine ourselves as a diver, a diver that is diving in the sea which its depth is unknown. But be brave, to discover the richness in our heart that allow us to give and to love. We might be wounded, stumbled by difficulties that inner heart tells us the fundamental upright for the way towards HAPPINESS as mentioned in The Beatitudes. Then you will see the world in a very different perspective with more understanding.
So back to first question, what is my VOCATION? How can I give myself in a best possible way for others? I know that I will fail for many times in this journey of discovery, I have faith that I will be lead to this treasure.
